Chapter 13

Evangeline was ready when he got there and Adam talked to his brother Garrett for a minute, giving him some new information, then the two were off together. Adam didn’t mention to his brother that they were going out. He just thought that Adam was giving her a ride home. Adam didn’t want to have to listen to all of the things he wasn’t supposed to be doing. He had already heard enough from Devin.

Evangeline was nervous. Her insides shook, and she was convinced that something was going to happen if she didn’t say something clever to get both of their minds off of what they were thinking about. Evangeline knew that she needed something else to think about. Anything.

When they got in the vehicle, she asked him how his day was, and he said that it was not so good.

“How was it with you and Benjamin?”

“It was good, he has been pretty quiet today, though. Do you know what it's about?”

Adam said that he didn’t but would look into it. They were now scrambling for conversation again. Everything was so strange between them, so it was hard for her to say much of anything. Evangeline wanted to believe that it was just a friendship thing, but the anticipation in the air told her otherwise. It made her nervous, especially because she had not felt this way before and did not know where it was going to end or what she was even supposed to do about it.

“Are you alright, Evangeline?”

Evangeline was staring off in the distance and jerked when she heard his voice. Her mind was on a million other things, and before too long, she agreed that everything was fine. It wasn't fine, she didn't feel fine, but that was what he wanted to hear, so that was what she was going to give him.

“You seem in another place.”

“I’ve just got a lot on my mind, that's all.”

“I can see that. Do you want to talk about it?”

There was no way that she wanted to talk about any of it. It was bad enough that he noticed.

“I don't think so.”

“That is the point of tonight.”

“Is it? It feels like maybe the point of tonight is something different.”

“What do you think it is?”

He suddenly had those dark eyes fixed on her and Evangeline was finding it hard to pay attention to anything else. Why did he always make her feel so unsettled?

“I don't know, Adam, but there is tension in the air that doesn't seem like it should be there. You know, if this was just a friendly kind of thing.”

“I was wondering if you felt that, too.”

Evangeline nodded that she did, but she had no other answer as to what they were supposed to do about it. Obviously, the last thing they should be doing was encouraging it.

“I just want to make sure that we are able to work together.”

“Is that what you worry about?”

Evangeline would have liked to agree, but it was just the tip of the iceberg.
